Our organic citrus fruit comes from Biovergel in Valencia. Director Hector Lopez, pictured, has been involved in organic farming for more than 25 years.
With ad hoc help from other local growers, he supplies us with oranges, clementines, lemons and grapefruits from November to May.
Valencia is the top citrus-producing region in Europe. An area of 180,000 hectares – that’s 720,000 allotments, or an area 11 times the size of Bristol – is used for citrus growing. The globalization of the food supply chain is jeopardizing the sustainability of small scale growers like Hector. Fierce competition from other producing regions and the aggressive buying policies of supermarkets are driving many farmers out of business.
