Suma is the UK’s largest independent wholefood wholesaler/distributor, specialising in vegetarian, fairly traded, organic, ethical and natural products. It is a workers’ co-operative committed to ethical business. Because co-ops operate a thoroughly democratic system of management Suma isn’t bound by the conventional notions of hierarchy. Therefore all Suma employees jointly own and manage the business. Everyone is paid the same and they collectively do all the jobs that need doing, whatever they happen to be.
Super sustainability credentials
Suma are one of the few businesses in the UK that sell strictly vegetarian produce. This means that no meat, no fish and no animal-derived nasties like gelatin or rennet are used. What’s more, they’ve used 100% renewable electricity for ages and even have motion sensors to switch the lights off when they leave the room. Their reps share a hybrid car and Suma’s vehicle tracking system records every delivery mile. They have an appointed carbon champion keeping a constant eye on their footprint and plant enough trees with Treesponsibility to get carbon neutral status! As for waste: Suma take back plastic and cardboard packaging from their customers. What Suma can’t re-use, they recycle. And food waste is composted.

How local is Suma?
Suma is based outside of Leeds, 202 miles from warehouse to our Wapping Wharf store. They aim to source much of their products from within the UK when possible and ensure it is traded fairly with other countries when they can’t. Suma are radically different… and we love them!
