Where it all began
The story began in 2016 when our Founder, Phil Haughton, visited friends in Penne, Abruzzo, central Italy to help with the olive harvest. During his visit, he met his friend’s neighbours, the Ferrante family, and a plan was hatched. Phil is always on the lookout for new products that tell stories, inspire enthusiasm and link us to growers and farmers.
Elio Ferrante and his family produce high quality organic single estate extra virgin olive oil on their 25 acre farm, which you might know as our Better Food Editions olive oil. It’s a customer fave!
The family are driven by the Italian love of local, seasonal and traditional cooking and after a fabulous visit to Bristol back in 2017 (anyone remember polenta the length of Wapping Wharf café?!), we’re so excited that they’re coming to join us again. They’ll be cooking up an Italian feast with an autumnal menu showcasing their regional cooking.
Fresh and local products
The next batch of olive oil will be harvested in October and will be shipped over in time for the meal, giving a rare opportunity to taste oil, not only of exceptional quality but rarely available this fresh. It will still be green and fiery with a strong peppery aftertaste.
You’ll also taste a range of other local produce, including the family’s own cured pork sausages and award winning Pecorino di Farindola.
The menu
As many ingredients as possible come direct from the Ferrante family farm. The menu was selected by the family as one that is typical for the time of year.
Antipasti:
- White beans with onions and squash
Primi piatti:
- Hand cut tagliaticci (fresh pasta) abruzesse style
- Fracchiata (made a bit like polenta, this is a mixture of local pea flours) with pancetta and fried abruzzo style dried peppers
Secondi piatti:
- Folded egg with red peppers & bacon
Served with:
- Award winning Pecorino di Farindola cheese
- Home cured pork sausages
- New seasons extra virgin olive oil
Dolce :
- A speciality of Abruzzo served with a glass of very special vino coto (a pudding wine produced by friends of the Ferrante family)
Vegetarian menu is also available on request. Please email marketing@betterfood.co.uk to request this.
