What to buy at Better Food: Irresistible local ice creams and sorbets
Marshfield Farm is not just a business, it’s a home. Will, the founder, has lived on the farm all his life and took over the farm from his father and has been making ice cream for over 30 years.
Every scoop of ice cream is made with over 50% fresh farm milk from their herd of 250 organic British Friesian cows. From the 4am early start in their milking parlour, to creating sensational new recipes in their on-site ice creamery, making the very best real dairy ice cream is a way of life at Marshfield Farm.
The Hawking’s family farm, Oldfield Farm, where the ice cream is made, has been certified organic since 1989. This means animal welfare, their environmental footprint and being as sustainable as possible is at the heart of the business. Their ice cream production is 100% carbon neutral thanks to a biomass boiler, 4 grade-two listed barns covered in solar panels and their own bore holes that cover their water requirements across the business. Marshfield aim to keep food miles low, and source as many ingredients from local and British suppliers as possible. Their packaging is a constantly evolving and improving, and their tubs are all curb-side recyclable.
Mission and values: Producing real dairy ice cream from ‘cow to cone’, with the highest welfare for their herds, and as low a carbon footprint as possible, even producing 95% of the food their cows need on the farm itself!
Location: Marshfield, Wiltshire, SN14 (9.8 miles to Better Food)
Certification: Marshfield Farm ice cream isn’t organic certified, however, the Hawking’s family farm, Oldfield Farm, where the dairy herd is reared and the ice cream is made is Soil Association organic certified.
We love them because… well, frankly, who doesn’t like ice cream? But we think Marshfield is a bit special – not only is it made from milk from herds reared under organic standards, just a few miles from Bristol, but all their flavour-packed varieties hit the spot when it comes to our ice cream and sorbet needs!
