What to buy at Better Food: Milk, yoghurt, kefir and cream, available St. Werburghs and Gloucester Road stores.
Third-generation farmer Jess Vaughan knows each of her 80 cows by name, many of whom are descended from the three cows her grandfather bought for Hardwicke Farm back in 1955. Her methods of low-intensity, organic farming—and the incredible respect with which she treats each of her ‘Ladies’—results in dairy products like no other. The very highest levels of animal welfare mean that Jess’s Ladies are never pushed to over-produce and have plenty of space to roam freely, graze and forage all year round. Unhomogenised and pasteurised only at relatively low temperatures, this is milk as it should be, fully traceable from farm to shelf and packed with flavour seldom found in dairy products today.
Mission and values: Jess’s approach focusses on protecting the land, treating her Ladies with unparalleled respect and producing a product that’s the best it can be. She believes in farming simply to maintain the intricate and natural balance on the farm, and in providing her herd with the best life possible. In her own words:
“They are not animals to be used, but business partners to be looked after and respected every day.”
Location: Hardwicke, GL2 (27.1 miles to Better Food)

We love them because… You only have to taste the Ladies’ milk to know that this is not your average dairy. Jess has a dedicated cohort of dairy-lovers who all know that only the highest standards of farming can produce flavour like this.
