Fish
For us, responsibly sourcing fish means not only looking closely at the environmental and welfare impacts, but also the impact on fishers’ livelihoods, as well as carefully considering the need to bring fish in from further afield or from fish farms.
In our sourcing and cafés
Our fresh fish is wild caught, from low impact fishing
We’ve taken a great deal of care in finding a fresh fish supplier whose approach minimises the impact on fish stocks and on the marine environment, and also looks after its community of small-scale fishers through guaranteed minimum fair prices for every catch. None of our fresh (unprocessed) fish is farmed.
In grocery, health & bodycare and our cafés, we stock products that use responsibly sourced fish
We take care to look into the source of any fish found in products in our grocery and health & bodycare sections, such as smoked salmon, tinned fish or fish found in supplements, as well as that used in our cafés. We’ve taken the decision to minimise the amount of farmed fish we stock, over concerns about the environmental and welfare issues relating to the farming of fish. We prioritise products that come from low impact, small scale fishing or, in some cases, organic farming. We will replace any product that we believe to be coming from an unsustainable source, and champion brands that are leading good practice in the industry.
We believe in less but better, and share this message with our community
We believe that one of the best ways we can all lower the impact of our diets is to eat only small amounts of meat, fish and dairy, and—when we do eat it—to choose products that come from farms and fisheries that are using the lowest impact methods of production, with the highest welfare standards. We’re proud to share this message with our community, and to offer more ways for our customers to choose sustainable diets.
We know that selling animal derived products is a great responsibility, and do our best to look into the source of these products, and to visit our principal suppliers in person wherever possible to meet the producers and better understand their practices.
Where we want to be
We’d like to ensure that every product on our shelves containing fish ingredients uses only fish from fishers using low impact fishing methods, or from responsible farming where necessary.
How are we keeping an eye on this policy and putting it into practice?
We ask all new suppliers to identify where they are using fish ingredients and to provide information on the provenance of those ingredients. We have begun an audit of all our current stock, which will include a specific review of products that contain fish ingredients.
