Streets to Kitchen January Update

In the new year, Square Food’s Caroline enticed participants back to the kitchen with warming recipes and variety, noting that one client has chosen the class because they only know how to make one dish and were bored.

One client told the course leaders that he’d just been given a hostel room following 18 months living in a tent. Despite owning no cooking equipment, he’s invested a few pounds of his first Universal Credit payment on a baking tray, inspired by the sessions to try cooking for himself in the hostel.

Classes covered more skills that will help the participants gain an ASDAN Foodwise Credits, which can contribute to a qualification in food skills. Techniques covered included weighing, rolling out, zesting, frying and whipping, producing sweet and savoury dishes such as blueberry pancakes, chicken & potato curry, spinach dahl and cheesy rolls.
