Panorama or Propaganda?
Did you watch ‘GM: Cultivating Fear’ on Panorama last night? Sparking a massive debate on Twitter, it’s hard to deny that the programme was heavily biased in favour of GM. Here’s what managing director Phil Haughton had to say about the programme: “There was no debate. It was a white wash in favour of GM.” “We have already lost 40 % of our topsoil from unsustainable farming practice. GM does nothing to deal with this, but assumes that chemical fertilisers (a major contributor to loss of topsoil) will always be the answer, even though they never were. They also assume that Phosphates will always be available, when they come from a finite resource, which has peaked. If Panorama were actually prepared to really look deeply at this subject, they would find REAL evidence that GM is certainly not proven to be safe. It is not about throwing the baby out with the bath water, it is about looking holistically at what we need to do in order to feed the people on our planet healthy nutritious foods. In 25 years’ time, we will definitely see the evidence that yet again we have been lead down the garden path by narrow focussed technology, and that what is left of non-GM crops will be heavily in demand. They told us that DDT was safe, they told us Thalidomide was safe and they told us Round Up was safe. I would urge BBC’s Panorama to show more intelligence and broad thinking in their reporting. We all owe it to our children.” Here are a few highlights from the Twitter debate – join the conversation here.
