What is the hungry gap?

The hungry gap is the time of year when we’ve made our way through the crops that were planted in summer, but where most of the spring crops aren’t quite ready for us. This period in the UK lasts from April until around mid-June.

It may sound daunting, but actually it can be a great chance to use your creativity (and maybe a little forward planning), when deciding what you fancy for dinner.

Carry on reading to find out our seasonal favourites during this period, as well as how you can get your hands on a continuous supply of your ‘must-have’ fruits and veggies.

Crossing the hungry gap

This period is a great opportunity to stick with the seasons and make use of what is on hand locally as some UK seasonal delights become available:

Don’t miss the beautiful purple sprouting broccoli currently on our shelves, from local supplier, Plowright.

Our delicious Heirloom tomatoes have just landed in store from the Isle of Wight. Pick up fresh mixed salad bags from Strode Valley Organics to go alongside – the perfect combination for this lovely Spring weather.

Heirloom tomatoes

Keep your eyes peeled towards the end of April for UK asparagus and Jersey royal potatoes!

Sky sprouts micro greens and sprouts are becoming increasingly popular due to their nutrient density. They’re the seedlings of herbs and plants that would usually grow to full size, and are so flavoursome. The best part? Because they’re so tiny they can be grown all year round, providing the perfect bridge to get us over the gap.

Our continuous supply

To ensure you still have access to your favourite veggies whenever you’re craving them, we rely more on imports at this time of year. But only produce that can arrive by ship, as we never airfreight any of our products.
